Allow compiling with openssl

This reverts commit 5152cd29.

from the end2end test thread itself (done by adding a TLS on that thread)

Also clang-format

poll overrides in such a way as to avoid polling races

since tsan slows things down a lot and may complicate issues such
as shutdown.

I also added some unrequested const's

Revive it in tests as well
